Basra is the sports capital of Iraq

The Deanship of the College of Physical Education and Sports Sciences at the University of Basra aspires to name Basra the sports capital because of its scientific and academic qualifications and sports facilities capable of being at the forefront of the Iraqi governorates and a strong competitor in the sports field.

This was stated by the Dean of the College, Prof. Dr. Sabah Mahdi Karim in a television interview on Al-Mayadeen satellite channel, where he said, "The Sports City in Basra is one of Basra's monuments and will be hospitable to all courses at the Arab, continental and Olympic levels."

He also added, "Within our proposals as the Dean of the College of Physical Education and Sports Sciences at the University of Basra, we want Basra to be a sports metropolis, but rather a sports capital in Iraq."

Earlier, the Dean stressed the need for cooperation between sports and non-sports institutions and close ranks to unify the word of Basra in the sports field in honor of what Basra, its athletes and its fans presented over the previous years.
